People are always looking for ways to increase the speed of their
Internet connection. With the fastest desktop modem maxing out
at 56k, the only thing you can do to increase your connection
performance is through software tweaks. One of the most common
fixes is to adjust the MaxMTU setting in Windows.
MaxMTU stands for maximum transmission unit. In general, when
you communicate over the Internet, your transmissions are cut
up into pieces and sent. Your ISP and the site your are trying
to visit may cut the transmission up into a specific size, and
if your computer cuts it up into a different size, you can slow
down your transmissions. Windows 95 had a default of 1500, when
the optimum setting is 576. A program like TweakDUN
by Patterson
Design Systems can set the registry correctly. Windows 98
was done a little better with it being able to recognize what
kind of connection you have, and if you have a dial-up connection,
it would automatically set the MaxMTU to 576. TweakDUN can still
verify this, and in both Windows 95/98 it can also check and set
some other Internet registry settings.
